There is also a very good DOS program written by Philip Burns called NUPop. It is available for ftp at casbah.acns.nwu.edu. It also includes a gopher client, ftp client, and terminal emulator, etc. The protected mode version runs very nicely under windows, and the newest alpha release also contains a newsreader. The windows version is supposed to be released this year. I don't know if this will be a winsock based program or not. Sender: ses Subject: RFD: comp.os.ms-windows new groups This is the official Request for Discussion (RFD) for the creation of five new newsgroups for Microsoft Windows. This is a separate (but coordinated) RFD from the one recently posted by Steve Scoggins (see .networking.windows group, below). The proposed new groups are described below: NAME: comp.os.ms-windows.networking.tcp-ip STATUS: Unmoderated. PURPOSE: Discussions about using Windows with TCP/IP networks. This includes discussions about TCP/IP implementations, NFS, WinSock, TCP/IP utilities, and connectivity and internetworking issues. NAME: comp.os.ms-windows.networking.windows * STATUS: Unmoderated. PURPOSE: Discussions about using Windows networks (Windows for Workgroups, NT Advanced Server and LAN Manager). *THIS GROUP IS COVERED BY ANOTHER RFD, POSTED BY STEVE SCOGGINS <sscoggin@libre.com>. Please follow up to that RFD if you wish to comment on this group (that RFD is being revised to be named .networking.windows). NAME: comp.os.ms-windows.networking.misc STATUS: Unmoderated. PURPOSE: Discussions about using Windows with networks other than TCP-IP and Windows networks (WFWG, NTAS, LANMan). Topics may include compatability issues, security, interoperability and performance. NAME: comp.os.ms-windows.video STATUS: Unmoderated. PURPOSE: Discussions about display adapters, monitors, video drivers, compatability and performance issues under Windows. NAME: comp.os.ms-windows.programmer.winhelp STATUS: Unmoderated. PURPOSE: Discussions about designing, creating and maintaining Windows helpfiles, including related development tools. NAME: comp.os.ms-windows.programmer.frameworks STATUS: Unmoderated. PURPOSE: Discussions about application frameworks for Windwos development. All frameworks, including OWL, MFC and C++/Views are appropriate, and any framework-specific discussion should be in this group instead of .programmer.misc or .programmer.tools. RATIONALE: Microsoft Windows continues its growth as the most popular PC-based operating environment in the world, with somewhere over 40 million copies shipped. As a result, the traffic in the Windows newsgroups has continued to grow at an unabated pace. The December readership statistics show an average of about 60 messages per day in the .apps and .programmer.misc groups, and heavy traffic in .misc as well. The excerpt shown below: +-- Estimated total number of people who read the group, worldwide. | +-- Actual number of readers in sampled population | | +-- Recent traffic (messages per month) | | | +-- Recent traffic (kilobytes per month) V V V V 91000 1224 1734 2495.4 comp.os.ms-windows.apps 87000 1173 1098 1596.5 comp.os.ms-windows.misc 83000 1116 1795 2755.8 comp.os.ms-windows.programmer.misc 77000 1039 42 193.8 comp.os.ms-windows.announce 70000 940 491 898.5 comp.os.ms-windows.programmer.tools 68000 917 408 588.4 comp.os.ms-windows.setup 61000 817 443 701.4 comp.os.ms-windows.programmer.win32 60000 804 718 1755.4 comp.os.ms-windows.advocacy 57000 768 993 1395.2 comp.os.ms-windows.nt.misc 44000 591 424 568.2 comp.os.ms-windows.nt.setup Some of the heaviest topics of discussion in the non-programmer groups are networking and video drivers. A subject line analysis found the following article percentages in the main groups in the past 45 days: Newsgroup video TCP/IP WinNet MiscNet ----------------------------------------------------------- .apps 69 237 145 7 .misc 124 73 121 60 .setup 150 41 177 21 ----------------------------------------------------------- Total 343 351 443 88 The only group without heavy existing traffic is .networking.misc, but it should, in my opinion, be created for symmetry and to give a place for Netware, Vines, LANtastic etc. discussions. The .programmer.misc group is has very heavy traffic, but is difficult to split into subgroups. The only identifiable topics that can, and should, be split are WinHelp programming and application framework discussions. Creating separate groups for these will somewhat reduce the .programmer.misc traffic, as well as provide a focused and reasonably-sized group for people wishing to discuss these specific topics. DISCUSSION PERIOD: The discussion period will run from 07 February 1994 to 27 February 1994. VOTING: The CFV (Call for Votes) will be issued on 28 February 1994, based on the feedback received during the discussion period. No votes will be accepted prior to the CFV. -- [ /tom haapanen -- tomh@metrics.com -- software metrics inc -- waterloo, ont ] [ "none love the bearer of bad news" -- sophocles ] From news@bigblue.oit.unc.edu Mon Feb 7 21:18:19 1994 Received: from bigblue.oit.unc.edu by SunSITE.Unc.EDU (5.65c+IDA/FvK-1.07) with SMTP id AA21328; Mon, 7 Feb 1994 18:06:52 -0500 Received: by bigblue.oit.unc.edu (AIX 3.2/UCB 5.64/4.03) id AA14462; Mon, 7 Feb 1994 17:44:00 -0500 Received: from GATEWAY by bigblue with netnews for winsock@sunsite.unc.edu (winsock@sunsite.unc.edu) To: winsock@sunsite.unc.edu Date: Mon, 7 Feb 1994 21:18:19 GMT From: mxg159@psu.edu (Michael A. The whole file was just taken as text. Anyone know the solution? Well, there's two things to try - first of all, from what I understand from looking at some of the HTML documents out on the net, if the first few characters are "<html>", the document is to be treated as html formatted (And it should end in "</html>"). However, last time I tried that with WinMosaic, it didn't work. However, it seems to have worked out that if you ask for a file that ends ".html" or ".htm", then that is probably an html formatted file.
